About LIP

LIP is a Portuguese scientific and technical association of public utility that has for goal the research in the fields of Experimental High Energy Physics and associated Instrumentation.

The LIP Computing Group performs R&D on distributed computing (grid, cloud and HPC) and provides leading edge compute and data services to support world class science both within LIP and internationally.

About the role

The candidate will integrate the LIP Computing Group based in Lisbon, and will work in distributed computing R&D and infrastructure projects at national and international level.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will possess a PhD/MSc/BSc in computer science or related sciences (e.g. physics, mathematics) and will have two or more years of experience in software development (applications may include references to contributed projects and open source repositories).

The ideal candidate will have experience with the following:

Python.
Software engineering
Other languages: C++, Java.
Cloud computing: Openstack, Linux containers, Virtualization technologies (KVM)
Continuous Integration and Software Quality Assurance: jenkins, github.
Web services, RESTful interfaces/APIs

In addition to the above, knowledge of the following topics would be a distinct advantage:

Distributed data management
Ansible
Docker
Databases SQL and NoSQL
Batch systems: Son of Grid Engine, SLURM
Linux: system administration, scripting
TCP/IP protocols
High performance computing: MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, OpenCL
Monitoring: nagios, cacti, ganglia

About you

Experience of working with scientists and/or technical staff.
High degree of initiative and ability to work well within a team.
Strong technical, interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to communicate effectively in English (written, verbal and presentation skills).
Ability to travel within Europe.
